Friends of Pump House

Picture

Welcome

Located at the Three-Mile Locks of the James River and Kanawha Canal in Richmond, Virginia, the historic Byrd Park Pump House was constructed between 1881-1883. The downstairs contained a water-powered pumping station, while the upstairs featured a large open-air pavilion that hosted lavish events and dances until the mid-1920’s. The Friends of Pump House are dedicated to protecting and revitalizing this historic architectural treasure, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Our Vision

A revitalized Pump House would be the crown jewel of the City of Richmond’s already stellar park system. However, the building needs water and sewer hookups, roof repairs and an outside elevator constructed to comply with ADA requirements before a certificate of occupancy can be granted. A certificate of occupancy is necessary before public access or any use of the Pump House can be allowed.

You can read about our efforts in our Annual Report. Our vision for the Pump House can be found here.

Through your donations and volunteer efforts, we as a community can revitalize the Pump House and surrounding park to its former glory.
